Like few things, food is something we all have in common. We all eat and are somehow connected because of it. I find immense joy in that. All my chatter about the tangy dressing on that salad or the bursting blueberries in those pancakes is just one small way of building this sense of community around food. Each recipe on my blog comes from a place of hunger, soul, and intention.
I'm quite nearly as fond of good drinks as I am good food. There's so much mood around a beverage, whether it's celebrating with a bottle of bubbly, lounging with a little whiskey, or cozying up with a cup of coffee. Every cup, every glass - they all have a story, or at the least, fill all the in-betweens in our lives just right.
I wouldn't love food the way I do if I hadn't studied nutrition. I've come to realize that every step of my path has shaped my appetite, my cooking, and my beliefs around food.
Following my undergraduate studies in Communication at the University of Washington, I completed a Master of Science Degree in Nutrition at Bastyr University and became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) after finishing my dietetic internship. I then started working as a community pediatric and prenatal dietitian for low-income families, which turned all my idealistic tendencies about food and cooking upside down. And yet, I've become intensely aware that feeding our families, in whatever way we know how, is an act of love.
Nutrition certainly has some roots in my cooking and shapes many of the meals I create, but I enjoy a croissant and hefty dose of caffeine in my coffee just as much as the next one. Food has the ability to nourish us in many ways and I like to honor each of those ways. Sometimes I need a vibrant salad, topped with quinoa and tahini and other nutritious what-have-yous. And sometimes I need my mom's homemade chocolate chip cookies, the ones with the extra haphazard scoop of flour for their comforting heft and cakey-ness. There's always room for both.
A good day is a day spent behind the camera. There is quite possibly nothing I'd rather do. The uncompromising thrill and energy that comes from a shoot has me hooked. I've taken to teaching myself, as I should probably not continue to bury myself in debt after the long go I had as a student. For now, at least. However! I have met some fiercely talented photographers along the way and I'm entirely grateful for their inspiration and mentorship. I've also taken a couple of food + photography workshops. I have so much to learn and explore and I'm smitten with the feeling of immersing myself in it all.
And then there were three. The husband and I welcomed our little boy, Crew Phinney, in January 2015. He's got an appetite as eager as they come. We couldn't be happier to have him at our table.
I have so much love for Seattle. I've lived in and around the area for my whole life and it has certainly shaped who I am. I'll be sharing some of my favorite spots and linking them here.
I could talk about travel just as much as I could about food. Ever my father's daughter, I can't help but start planning my next trip as soon as I return from one. Food and travel go hand in hand; eating my way through a new place is surely my favorite way to explore it.
